Capric acid melts at about 31 °C, very close to warehouse and container temperatures in warm weather. The same product can arrive as hard flakes in winter, as fused lumps after a hot transit, or partly liquid in a tropical port. None of these changes the chemistry. Plan for it by melting whole containers before use, or by choosing molten bulk delivery if you have heated storage.

Medium-chain triglycerides are made by esterifying glycerol with a mixture of caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) acids, typically in a C8-rich ratio. The product is then refined to remove residual free acid, colour and odour. The C8:C10 ratio controls viscosity, cloud point and skin feel, so MCT makers specify both acids carefully, or buy a pre-blended caprylic–capric acid of fixed ratio.

Capric acid, and especially eutectic blends of capric and lauric acids, melt close to room temperature and absorb and release heat as they change phase. They have been studied and used for thermal energy storage, for example in building materials and temperature-buffered packaging. Performance depends on blend purity and on how well the material is contained. Test cycling stability and container compatibility for your design.

The neighbouring cuts from distillation, caprylic acid (C8) and lauric acid (C12). Extra C8 adds odour and lowers the melting point. Extra C12 raises the melting point and changes the properties of derived esters. For esters with a defined chain length, or for phase-change blends with a tight melting point, set a maximum for each as well as a minimum C10 content, and ask for gas chromatography results on each lot.

Flakes or pastilles in bags suit users who melt small batches and can keep the store cool. Drums filled with molten acid avoid dust and caking, but they need a drum heater or hot room to empty them. Heated bulk delivery suits users with heated, insulated tanks. Choose based on your melting capacity and store temperatures, and state your preference in the enquiry.

Only when the acid is made from palm kernel oil. In that case, it can be traded under a certified supply chain model, most often Mass Balance, where certified and conventional feedstock are mixed but the certified share is tracked. Coconut-derived capric acid is outside the RSPO scheme, although other sustainability programmes may apply. If you need a certified palm claim, ask for the certificate scope for the distillation site.
