在一条油脂化学表面活性剂产品线中，LABSA是参照基准，而不是例外。它的碳链来自煤油馏分的正构烷烃，而非棕榈醇或椰子醇，仅此一点差别就解释了配方师所权衡的大部分内容。按单位活性物计，它通常是市场上最便宜的阴离子表面活性剂，配入助剂后在硬水中去污良好，而且由于碳链为直链，易生物降解。反过来看，它对皮肤的刺激性高于脂肪醇硫酸盐和异硫酸酯盐，不能主张天然来源或RSPO认证，价格跟随原油而非棕榈产业链。因此，多数实际配方是把它与油脂化学表面活性剂并用而非取代：LABSA负责去污力和成本，月桂醇聚醚硫酸酯钠或椰油酰羟乙基磺酸钠负责温和性和泡沫质感，再以椰油酰胺丙基甜菜碱之类的两性表面活性剂降低整体刺激性。采购时买的是96%的酸，在客户自己的工厂中和：粉剂和多数液体用烧碱，需要溶解性更好的盐时用氢氧化钾或三乙醇胺。
用于洗衣粉和洗衣皂、洗洁精和硬表面清洁剂，在复合皂中与皂粒和脂肪酸皂配伍，并在工业配方中用作乳化剂和酸性催化剂。
