    Starch Ternary Blend Film Compound

    About This Product

This is a three-component pellet compound: PLA, an aliphatic polyester made from plant sugars; PBAT, a flexible aliphatic-aromatic copolyester; and starch, a crop-derived carbohydrate. The three are melt compounded and supplied as pellets for film extrusion. The whole system is biodegradable, not only the starch component.

Adding starch as a third component to a PLA and PBAT system does two things a sourcing buyer cares about: it raises the bio-based fraction of the finished film and it lowers the cost per kilogram, since starch is considerably cheaper than either of the polyesters it displaces. The two-component system exists because PLA and PBAT are complementary, PLA being stiff and strong but brittle and PBAT tough and extensible but soft, so that blended they give a film which is neither brittle nor limp. Starch takes neither role. It is a rigid, polar particulate in a continuous polyester phase, so load transfers across the interface poorly and its hydroxyl groups take up water. The trade-off is real: a ternary blend has lower mechanical performance and more moisture sensitivity than the two-component systems, so it suits general-purpose film where the specification has headroom rather than demanding tear or barrier applications. Supplied as a raw material for processing on your own line; we do not produce finished articles.

It is used in bio-based film, renewable content substitution, general purpose packaging film and biodegradable polymer systems.

Bio Green Oleo supplies the starch ternary blend film compound to specification on blend ratio, starch content, pellet form and target film gauge.
