Dioctyl Sebacate (DOS)
A diester of sebacic acid (CAS 122-62-3), the ten-carbon diacid obtained from castor oil. A castor-derived ester used as a synthetic lubricant base stock as well as a low-temperature plasticiser.

Epoxidised Soybean Oil (ESBO)
An epoxidised vegetable triglyceride (CAS 8013-07-8) bought on oxirane oxygen content. One of the highest-volume bio-based functional chemicals, and a route into polyols without petrochemical feedstock.

Lauric Acid
Lauric acid, systematically dodecanoic acid, is the twelve-carbon saturated fatty acid with CAS number 143-07-7. It is the principal acid of coconut and palm kernel oil and the chain length on which most foaming surfactant chemistry is built.

Myristic Acid
Myristic acid, systematically tetradecanoic acid, is the fourteen-carbon saturated fatty acid with CAS number 544-63-8. Obtained from coconut, palm kernel and nutmeg oils, it produces a dense, stable, creamy lather in soaps and cleansers.

Palmitic Acid
Palmitic acid, systematically hexadecanoic acid, is the sixteen-carbon saturated fatty acid with CAS number 57-10-3. Named after palm oil, in which it is the dominant acid, it melts at about 63 degrees Celsius and gives soap and cosmetics their firmness.

Oleic Acid
Oleic acid (CAS 112-80-1) is the eighteen-carbon monounsaturated fatty acid, liquid at room temperature because of the single cis double bond that kinks its chain. Commercial grades are traded by iodine value, titre and colour.

Caprylic Acid
Caprylic acid, systematically octanoic acid, is an eight-carbon saturated fatty acid with CAS number 124-07-2. Recovered from coconut and palm kernel oil, it melts near 17 degrees Celsius and is a primary feedstock for MCT oil and ester synthesis.

Capric Acid
Capric acid, systematically decanoic acid, is a ten-carbon saturated fatty acid with CAS number 334-48-5. Recovered by fractionating coconut or palm kernel oil, it melts at about 31 degrees Celsius and is a building block for esters and MCT oils.

Caproic Acid
Caproic acid, systematically hexanoic acid, is a six-carbon saturated fatty acid with CAS number 142-62-1. It is an oily liquid at room temperature with a powerful cheese-like odour, and is used mainly to make flavour and fragrance esters.

Cetyl Alcohol
Cetyl alcohol (CAS 36653-82-4, INCI Cetyl Alcohol) is a sixteen-carbon saturated fatty alcohol, supplied as a white waxy solid melting near 49 degrees Celsius. It thickens emulsions and gives creams and conditioners their characteristic slip.

Stearyl Alcohol
Stearyl alcohol (CAS 112-92-5, INCI Stearyl Alcohol) is the eighteen-carbon saturated fatty alcohol, a white waxy solid melting near 58 degrees Celsius. It is the firmest of the common cosmetic fatty alcohols and gives the richest body.

Cetostearyl Alcohol
Cetostearyl alcohol (CAS 67762-27-0, INCI Cetearyl Alcohol) is a blend of cetyl and stearyl fatty alcohols, usually close to equal parts. It is the standard consistency factor and co-emulsifier in creams, lotions and hair conditioners.

Myristyl Alcohol
Myristyl alcohol (CAS 112-72-1, INCI Myristyl Alcohol) is the fourteen-carbon saturated fatty alcohol, a white waxy solid melting near 38 degrees Celsius. It is lighter than cetyl alcohol and is used where a softer set and faster melt are wanted.

Isopropyl Palmitate
Isopropyl palmitate (CAS 142-91-6, INCI Isopropyl Palmitate) is the ester of isopropanol and palmitic acid. It is slightly heavier and more cushioned on the skin than isopropyl myristate, and is used as an emollient and pigment wetting agent.

Isopropyl Myristate
Isopropyl myristate (CAS 110-27-0, INCI Isopropyl Myristate) is the ester of isopropanol and myristic acid, a clear low-viscosity oil. It spreads and absorbs quickly without greasiness, and is used to thin heavy formulations and aid penetration.

Cetyl Palmitate
Cetyl palmitate (CAS 540-10-3, INCI Cetyl Palmitate) is the ester of cetyl alcohol and palmitic acid, a white crystalline wax melting near 50 degrees Celsius. It is the plant-derived replacement for spermaceti in creams, sticks and colour cosmetics.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
Sodium laureth sulfate (INCI Sodium Laureth Sulfate) is SLS with ethylene oxide units inserted between the fatty chain and the sulfate head, usually two or three. Those units make it milder, more soluble and far more responsive to salt thickening.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB)
Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAS 61789-40-0, INCI Cocamidopropyl Betaine) is an amphoteric surfactant made from coconut fatty acids. Supplied as a 30 percent solution, it is the standard partner surfactant that boosts foam and reduces the harshness of SLES.

Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil (CAS 61789-91-1, INCI Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil) is not an oil in the usual sense. It is a liquid wax ester from the seed of Simmondsia chinensis, and that structure makes it exceptionally resistant to oxidation.

Calcium Stearate
Calcium stearate is the calcium salt of stearic acid, a water-insoluble metallic soap made from palm-derived fatty acid. It is supplied as white powder at 125, 200 or 325 mesh, and as beads and granules.

Confirm the evidence before ordering
Grade, origin and certification are confirmed for each proposed source. A vegetable-derived feedstock is not automatically certified sustainable, pharmaceutical grade or suitable for every application; request the evidence needed for your intended use.
