Myristyl Alcohol

About This Product
Myristyl alcohol is a straight-chain saturated fatty alcohol with fourteen carbon atoms, systematically tetradecan-1-ol, carrying CAS number 112-72-1 and the INCI name Myristyl Alcohol. It is produced by reducing myristic acid or its methyl ester, both obtained from coconut or palm kernel oil, and is supplied as white flakes, pastilles or powder.
It belongs to the same series as cetyl and stearyl alcohol and performs the same functions, but two fewer carbons in the chain shift its properties in a predictable direction. It melts lower, at around 38 degrees Celsius, which is close enough to skin temperature that it softens on contact rather than dragging. It also gives a lighter body and a less waxy after-feel than cetyl alcohol, so it is chosen where a formulation needs thickening and emulsion support without the heaviness the longer alcohols bring. As with the rest of the series, the long chain plus a single terminal hydroxyl group is what lets it position itself at the oil-water interface and stiffen the film around each droplet.
It is used as an emollient, thickener and co-emulsifier in creams, lotions and hair conditioners, as a pearlising and opacifying aid, in pharmaceutical ointments, and as an intermediate for myristyl sulfate and ethoxylate surfactants.
