About This Product
As an oleochemical feedstock, castor oil occupies a position no other vegetable oil can fill. It is pressed from the seed of Ricinus communis and carries CAS number 8001-79-4, but its value in chemical conversion has nothing to do with it being an oil and everything to do with one functional group. Ricinoleic acid, 85 to 90 percent of the total, is 12-hydroxy-9-cis-octadecenoic acid: a normal C18 chain carrying a hydroxyl group at carbon 12.
That hydroxyl group gives three separate reaction routes, and the whole castor derivatives industry is built on them. Alkaline pyrolysis cleaves the chain at the hydroxyl to give sebacic acid and 2-octanol, the basis of nylon 6,10 and various plasticisers. Pyrolytic cracking gives undecylenic acid and heptanal. Hydrogenation of the double bond, leaving the hydroxyl intact, gives 12-hydroxystearic acid, the thickener in most lithium greases. Because the hydroxyl is also an alcohol, the oil serves directly as a natural polyol in polyurethane systems, and dehydrates to a drying oil for coatings. Typical values are an iodine value of 82 to 90 and a saponification value of 176 to 187.
It is supplied for sebacic and undecylenic acid manufacture, polyurethane polyols, alkyd and dehydrated castor oil resins, grease intermediates, sulphated Turkey Red oil and surfactant production.
Bio Green Oleo supplies commercial and first special grade castor oil to specification on hydroxyl value, iodine value, acid value, moisture, colour and viscosity.

Confirm the evidence before ordering
Grade, origin and certification are confirmed for each proposed source. A vegetable-derived feedstock is not automatically certified sustainable, pharmaceutical grade or suitable for every application; request the evidence needed for your intended use.
