Cetyl Palmitate

About This Product
Cetyl palmitate is a wax ester formed between cetyl alcohol and palmitic acid, both obtained from palm or coconut oil. It carries CAS number 540-10-3 and the INCI name Cetyl Palmitate, and is supplied as white crystalline flakes, beads or powder with almost no odour. It is the principal constituent of spermaceti, the wax formerly taken from sperm whales, and the synthetic plant-derived ester has completely replaced that material.
Because both halves of the molecule are saturated and have no free acid or hydroxyl groups left after esterification, the wax is chemically inert, stable to oxidation and neutral in pH. It melts sharply at about 50 degrees Celsius, and this sharp transition is what makes it useful: it stays firm in the pack and then collapses quickly to a thin liquid at skin temperature, giving the clean, non-greasy glide that heavier waxes such as beeswax do not. In a formulation it raises melting point and hardness, stabilises emulsions, and imparts a dry, velvety after-feel.
It is used in creams and lotions, lipsticks and stick products, pressed powders and colour cosmetics, sun care, hair conditioners and pharmaceutical ointments, and industrially in polishes and as a lubricant in plastics processing.
Bio Green Oleo supplies cetyl palmitate to specification on ester value, melting point, acid value, saponification value, iodine value, colour and moisture.
