Isopropyl Palmitate

About This Product
Isopropyl palmitate is the ester formed between isopropyl alcohol and palmitic acid, the sixteen-carbon fatty acid from palm oil. It carries CAS number 142-91-6 and the INCI name Isopropyl Palmitate, and is supplied as a clear, colourless, near-odourless liquid of low viscosity.
It belongs to the same family as isopropyl myristate and works the same way, but the two extra carbons in the fatty chain shift its character measurably. It is slightly more viscous and less volatile, spreads a little more slowly, and leaves a softer, more cushioned after-feel rather than the very dry finish of the myristate. Formulators choose between them on exactly that basis. Because the molecule has no free acid or hydroxyl group it is chemically stable, resists oxidation and does not hydrolyse readily at normal formulation pH. Its low surface tension also makes it good at wetting and dispersing pigments, which is why it appears in so many colour cosmetics.
It is used as an emollient and spreading agent in creams, lotions, sun care and hair products, as a pigment wetting agent in foundations, lipsticks and pressed powders, in antiperspirants and bath products, in pharmaceutical topicals, and as a synthetic lubricant base.
Bio Green Oleo supplies isopropyl palmitate to specification on ester content, acid value, saponification value, iodine value, moisture, colour and refractive index.
