    Isopropyl Myristate

Isopropyl Myristate – Oleochemical Feedstocks product from Bio Green Oleo

    About This Product

Isopropyl myristate, commonly abbreviated IPM, is the ester formed between isopropyl alcohol and myristic acid, the fourteen-carbon fatty acid obtained from coconut or palm kernel oil. It carries CAS number 110-27-0 and the INCI name Isopropyl Myristate, and is supplied as a clear, colourless, practically odourless liquid with very low viscosity.

Esterifying a fatty acid with a small branched alcohol produces a molecule with the oil compatibility of a fatty chain but a far lower viscosity and surface tension than the parent acid or a triglyceride. The practical result is a very fast, thin spread and rapid apparent absorption, with none of the heavy film a vegetable oil leaves. The same properties make it a penetration enhancer: by fluidising the lipids between skin cells it increases the rate at which active ingredients pass through, which is deliberately exploited in transdermal and topical pharmaceutical formulations and is a point to assess when reformulating. It is also an effective solvent for many oil-soluble actives, sunscreens and pigments.

It is used in creams, lotions, antiperspirants, sun care, hair products, colour cosmetics, bath oils and cleansing products, in pharmaceutical topicals, and industrially as a lubricant and solvent.

Bio Green Oleo supplies isopropyl myristate to specification on ester content, acid value, saponification value, iodine value, moisture, colour and refractive index.
