    Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Castor Wax)

Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Castor Wax) – Oleochemical Feedstocks product from Bio Green Oleo

    About This Product

In oleochemical processing, hydrogenated castor oil is valued less as a finished wax than as the route to 12-hydroxystearic acid. It is produced by fully hydrogenating castor oil, which saturates the double bond in ricinoleic acid while leaving the hydroxyl group at carbon 12 untouched, giving a triglyceride built almost entirely from 12-hydroxystearic acid. It carries CAS number 8001-78-3 and is supplied as flake, powder or micronised grades.

Splitting or saponifying the wax releases the free hydroxy acid, and that molecule is the basis of the world's dominant grease chemistry. Reacted with lithium hydroxide it forms lithium 12-hydroxystearate, which crystallises into a dense mat of microscopic fibres. Oil is trapped in that fibre network by capillary action, which is what turns a liquid base oil into a grease that stays in a bearing. The hydroxyl group is essential: a lithium soap made from ordinary stearic acid produces a far weaker and less heat-resistant structure, which is why plain stearic acid cannot substitute here.

Beyond grease manufacture, the wax is used directly as an anti-settling and rheology additive in coatings and inks, as a structurant in cosmetic sticks, as a lubricant and release agent in polymer processing, and in hot-melt and textile systems.

Bio Green Oleo supplies hydrogenated castor oil to specification on melting point, hydroxyl value, acid value, iodine value, moisture and particle size.
