    Oleic Acid

Oleic Acid – Fatty Acids & Distillates product from Bio Green Oleo

    About This Product

Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid with eighteen carbon atoms and one cis double bond at position nine, formula C18H34O2, with CAS number 112-80-1. It is recovered by splitting vegetable oils, chiefly palm, soybean, sunflower and tallow, and separating the liquid fraction from the solid saturated acids by pressing or solvent fractionation. Commercial oleic acid is not a pure compound but a graded mixture, sold as low-titre, single-distilled or high-purity material.

The single double bond accounts for almost everything that distinguishes it from stearic acid, its saturated equivalent. A cis double bond puts a permanent thirty-degree kink in the chain, so the molecules cannot pack into an ordered crystal. Stearic acid, straight and packable, melts at 70 degrees Celsius; oleic acid, with one kink, melts at 16 and is a liquid in the drum. That is the entire basis of its handling advantage, since it needs no melting before use. The same double bond is a reactive site, allowing sulphonation, epoxidation, ozonolysis to azelaic and pelargonic acid, and dimerisation to dimer acid, but it is also an oxidation site, so the acid darkens and develops odour if stored hot or aerated.

It is used in soaps and surfactants, textile and leather processing, metalworking fluids, lubricants, dimer acids, alkyd resins and personal care.

Bio Green Oleo supplies oleic acid grades to specification on iodine value, titre, acid and saponification value, colour and moisture.
