    About This Product

    Dioctyl sebacate, properly bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, is the diester of sebacic acid with 2-ethylhexanol. Its interest from an oleochemical standpoint is the acid: sebacic acid is one of the few commercially important dibasic acids that is genuinely bio-based, produced by alkaline cleavage of ricinoleic acid from castor oil.

    That origin gives the molecule a long, flexible, fully saturated aliphatic chain between the two ester groups, and the properties follow from it directly. The absence of an aromatic ring keeps the pour point very low and the viscosity index high, while the ester linkages give good thermal and oxidative stability and metal wetting.

    Those are exactly the properties wanted in a synthetic lubricant, and diester base stocks of this type are long established in aviation turbine oils, compressor oils and high-performance greases, where they operate across a wider temperature range than mineral oil can. The same low-temperature flexibility is what makes it valuable as a cold-resistant plasticiser in polymer compounds.
