    Cardanol (Bio‑Based Phenol)

Cardanol (Bio‑Based Phenol) – Bio-Based Phenolic Specialties product from Bio Green Oleo

    About This Product

Cardanol is a bio-based phenol obtained from cashew nut shell liquid, the resin held in the honeycomb layer of the cashew shell. Heating decarboxylates the anacardic acid in the raw liquid to cardanol, which is then vacuum-distilled to concentrate it. It carries CAS number 37330-39-5 and is supplied as a pale yellow to brown viscous liquid. It is a by-product of cashew nut processing and does not compete with food crops or arable land.

Structurally it is a phenol carrying a fifteen-carbon chain in the meta position, and that side chain is the whole point of the material. Petroleum phenol is a small, rigid molecule, so resins made from it are hard and brittle. The long, partly unsaturated chain on cardanol acts as a built-in internal plasticiser, giving resins toughness and flexibility without adding a separate plasticiser that could migrate out over time. The unsaturation in the chain also provides sites for further crosslinking, drying and polymerisation.

It is used in friction materials for brake linings and clutch facings, where the resin must stay tough at high temperature, and in phenolic and epoxy resin systems, surface coatings and paints, adhesives, foundry binders, epoxy curing agents and polyol production.

Bio Green Oleo supplies cardanol to specification on cardanol content, iodine value, viscosity, moisture, colour and acid value.
