Decarboxylated Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (DCNSL)

About This Product
Decarboxylated cashew nut shell liquid, supplied as DCNSL and also called technical CNSL, is produced by heating natural cashew nut shell liquid so that the anacardic acid it contains loses carbon dioxide and converts to cardanol. It is a dark brown viscous liquid and is the form in which most CNSL enters industrial use.
The change is more than a reduction in acidity. Anacardic acid carries a carboxyl group attached directly to the aromatic ring, and that group is thermally unstable: it will decompose and release carbon dioxide during resin cure, causing foaming, voids and inconsistent results. Removing it beforehand gives a feedstock that behaves predictably at high processing temperatures. What remains is chemically simpler and more reactive in the way a resin chemist wants, being dominated by cardanol, a phenol carrying a fifteen-carbon unsaturated side chain. That side chain acts as a built-in plasticiser, so resins made from DCNSL are tougher and less brittle than those from petroleum phenol, and the residual unsaturation gives additional crosslinking sites.
It is used in brake linings, clutch facings and other friction materials, phenolic and epoxy resin systems, foundry binders, coatings, adhesives, laminates and as feedstock for distilled cardanol.
Bio Green Oleo supplies DCNSL to specification on cardanol content, residual anacardic acid, viscosity, moisture, ash and iodine value.
