    Capric Acid

Capric Acid – Fatty Acids & Distillates product from Bio Green Oleo

    About This Product

Capric acid is a straight-chain saturated fatty acid with ten carbon atoms, formula C10H20O2, and CAS number 334-48-5. Its systematic name is decanoic acid. It is recovered by splitting coconut or palm kernel oil into its constituent fatty acids and then fractionally distilling them, and it is supplied as white flakes, beads or a warm liquid with a faint waxy odour.

Capric acid belongs to the medium-chain group, and chain length is what determines its behaviour. At ten carbons it melts at roughly 31 degrees Celsius, low enough that it can be handled as a liquid with modest heating, and it is more water-soluble and more volatile than the longer C16 and C18 acids. Like all saturated fatty acids it has no double bonds, so it resists oxidation and does not develop rancid off-notes on storage. In use the carboxylic acid group is the reactive site, forming esters with alcohols and salts with bases.

It is used to make medium-chain triglycerides for nutrition and cosmetics, plasticisers and synthetic lubricant esters, food-grade and flavour esters, and metal soaps. It is also used in specialty surfactants and as an intermediate for antimicrobial esters such as glyceryl caprate.

Bio Green Oleo supplies capric acid to specification on assay, chain length distribution, iodine value, acid and saponification value, colour and moisture.
