About This Product
Palm fatty acid distillate is the material collected under vacuum at the deodorisation stage of palm oil physical refining. Steam stripping removes the free fatty acids and volatile compounds that would otherwise spoil the flavour and stability of the refined oil, and that stripped fraction, condensed and cooled, is PFAD. It is a light brown solid melting at around 45 to 50 degrees Celsius, and is a co-product of refining rather than a manufactured product.
Its defining characteristic is very high free fatty acid content, typically 85 to 95 percent, principally palmitic and oleic acid, together with minor glycerides and a valuable residue of tocopherols, tocotrienols and sterols. That high acidity is the reason for both its low price and its processing route: material this acidic cannot be used as an edible oil and cannot be transesterified with alkali catalysts, because the free acids would saponify and destroy the catalyst. It is instead processed by acid-catalysed esterification, by splitting and distillation to recover the individual fatty acids, or by direct saponification. Availability tracks palm refining volume, so supply is steady but the price is volatile.
It is used for fatty acid and vitamin E recovery, soap and laundry bar manufacture, biodiesel esterification, animal feed energy, candles and industrial compounding.
Bio Green Oleo supplies PFAD to specification on free fatty acid, moisture and impurities, iodine value, titre and colour.
