棕榈油脂肪酸馏出物是在棕榈油物理精炼的脱臭工段于真空条件下收集的物料。蒸汽汽提可除去会影响精炼油风味与稳定性的游离脂肪酸及挥发性组分，该汽提馏分经冷凝、冷却后即为 PFAD。它是浅棕色固体，熔点约为 45 至 50 摄氏度，属于精炼过程的副产物，而非专门生产的产品。
其决定性特征是游离脂肪酸含量极高，通常为 85% 至 95%，主要为棕榈酸和油酸，并含有少量甘油酯以及具有价值的生育酚、生育三烯酚和甾醇残留物。这种高酸度既决定了它的低价格，也决定了其加工路线：酸度如此之高的物料无法用作食用油，也无法采用碱性催化剂进行酯交换，因为游离酸会发生皂化并破坏催化剂。它通常采用酸催化酯化、油脂裂解与蒸馏回收单一脂肪酸，或直接皂化的方式加工。其供应量取决于棕榈油精炼量，因此货源稳定，但价格波动较大。
主要用于脂肪酸与维生素 E 回收、肥皂及洗衣皂条生产、生物柴油酯化、动物饲料能量补充、蜡烛以及工业配料。
