硬脂醇是含十八个碳原子的直链饱和脂肪醇，系统名称为十八烷-1-醇，CAS 号为 112-92-5，INCI 名称为 Stearyl Alcohol。它由棕榈油或其他植物来源的硬脂酸或其甲酯还原制得，供货形态为白色片状、锭状、粒状或粉状。
它是配方中常规使用的该系列产品中碳链最长的一员，其性能亦由此而来。其熔点约为 58 摄氏度，比鲸蜡醇高约九度，在三种常用规格中提供最硬的凝固效果、最高的增稠贡献以及最丰厚、最具缓冲感的肤感。鲸蜡醇给人以轻盈顺滑之感，而硬脂醇则厚实而带蜡感；配方师会将两者复配，或直接采购预先复配的鲸蜡硬脂醇，以取得二者之间的平衡。其作用机理始终一致：长碳链锚定于油相，而末端唯一的羟基位于水相，使包覆每一乳液液滴的界面膜变得坚固，防止液滴合并。
它在乳霜、乳液和护发素中用作增稠剂、遮光剂、润肤剂和助乳化剂，也用于药用软膏和栓剂，并作为硬脂基硫酸盐和硬脂基乙氧基化物表面活性剂的中间体。
