What is the difference between palm oil and palm kernel oil?

They come from different parts of the same fruit. Palm oil is pressed from the fleshy outer mesocarp and is rich in palmitic and oleic acids (C16 and C18). Palm kernel oil comes from the seed inside and is a lauric oil, with about 44–52% lauric acid plus myristic acid. That gives palm kernel oil quick lather in soap and makes it a source of C8–C14 fatty acids and alcohols, which palm oil cannot provide.

Should I buy crude or RBD palm kernel oil?

It depends on what happens next. Fat splitters and distillers often use crude palm kernel oil, because splitting and distillation remove colour and odour anyway, and they buy against limits for free fatty acids and impurities. Toilet soap makers who saponify the oil directly usually prefer RBD oil, because its colour and odour carry through to the bar. Methyl ester plants can use either, but high free fatty acids in crude oil need pre-treatment.

How does palm kernel oil compare with coconut oil?

Both are lauric oils with similar lauric acid contents. Coconut oil usually has a little more caprylic and capric acid and less oleic acid, so its iodine value is lower, around 7–12 against roughly 14–21 for palm kernel oil. The two are interchangeable in many soap and oleochemical processes with small adjustments. Origin matters mostly for labelling and for sustainability claims, because coconut oil falls outside the RSPO scheme.

How should bulk palm kernel oil be heated for discharge?

Heat gently and gradually until the oil is fully liquid and a few degrees above its melting point, rather than quickly to a high temperature. Local overheating at the heating coils darkens the oil and speeds up the formation of free fatty acids and oxidation. Make sure the whole parcel is melted and mixed before sampling, or the samples will not represent the cargo. Follow the heating instructions agreed in the contract and record the temperatures.

Why does the free fatty acid limit matter for crude palm kernel oil?

Free fatty acids show how much of the oil has already been hydrolysed, by moisture, heat and enzymes during storage and transport. Higher free fatty acids mean higher refining losses, more soapstock and, in methyl ester production, the need for acid pre-esterification. Keep water out and avoid unnecessary heating, because free fatty acids can keep rising after loading. That is why contracts set a maximum and why sampling at both loading and discharge is common.

Which RSPO supply chain model should I ask for?

It depends on the claim you want to make. Identity Preserved and Segregated palm kernel oil keep certified oil physically separate, which supports a claim that the product contains certified palm. Mass Balance mixes certified and conventional oil but tracks the certified volume, so it supports a narrower claim. Check what your customers accept, then ask for the certificate number and scope of the supplying site with the quotation.
