    Alkyl Polyglucoside (APG)

Alkyl Polyglucoside (APG) – Surfactant Intermediates product from Bio Green Oleo

    About This Product

Alkyl polyglucosides, usually shortened to APG, are non-ionic surfactants produced by reacting glucose obtained from corn or wheat starch with a fatty alcohol derived from coconut or palm kernel oil. The coconut-chain grade carries the INCI name Coco-Glucoside and CAS number 68515-73-1. Both halves of the molecule come from plants, which is unusual among surfactants and is the main reason APG is specified in natural and ecolabel-certified formulations.

The glucose head and the fatty tail are joined by an acetal link rather than the ether chain used in conventional non-ionic surfactants. That difference matters in practice. Because there is no ethoxylation step, APG carries no ethylene oxide or 1,4-dioxane residues, and because the sugar head does not dehydrate on warming, APG has no cloud point in the way an ethoxylate does. It is also stable in strong alkali, which most non-ionics are not, so it can be used in caustic cleaning systems. It foams moderately on its own but boosts and stabilises the foam of anionic surfactants when blended with them.

It is used in hand dishwashing liquids, hard-surface and industrial cleaners, laundry products, agrochemical wetting agents, and in shampoos, body washes and baby-care products where mildness to skin and eyes is the requirement.

Bio Green Oleo supplies alkyl polyglucoside grades to specification on active matter, chain length distribution, pH, colour and free fatty alcohol.
