    Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI)

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) – Surfactant Intermediates product from Bio Green Oleo

    About This Product

Sodium cocoyl isethionate, usually abbreviated SCI, is an anionic surfactant produced by esterifying coconut-derived fatty acids with sodium isethionate. It carries CAS number 61789-32-0 and the INCI name Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, and is supplied as white to cream flakes, needles, granules or powder.

Its value lies in what it is not. True soap is the sodium salt of a fatty acid and is necessarily alkaline in solution, at around pH 9 to 10, which swells and disrupts the skin barrier and is the reason soap bars leave skin feeling tight. SCI is an ester rather than a salt of a fatty acid, so it is stable and effective at neutral or mildly acidic pH and does not need alkalinity to work. It also tolerates hard water without forming the insoluble calcium scum that soap leaves as a bathtub ring. The lather it produces is dense and creamy rather than loose and bubbly, and it leaves a distinctly soft after-feel. Because it is a crystalline solid rather than a liquid, it can be pressed into a bar, which is what makes a syndet or combination bar possible at all.

It is used in syndet and combination cleansing bars, facial cleansers, shampoo bars, solid personal-care formats, baby washes and liquid body washes.

Bio Green Oleo supplies sodium cocoyl isethionate to specification on active matter, free fatty acid, sodium isethionate, moisture, pH and colour.
