12-羟基硬脂酸是一种饱和羟基脂肪酸，由氢化蓖麻油制得，因此也以“氢化蓖麻油脂肪酸”之名销售。本牌号为无臭的蜡状固体，呈乳白色片状，分子量为 300，熔点不低于 73 °C，按 GLC 法测定的 12-羟基硬脂酸含量为 83–87%。硬脂酸占 8–12%，12-酮基硬脂酸最多占 2%。
在润滑领域，该酸在锂基、钙基和钡基润滑脂中构成皂基稠化剂，使润滑脂具有较高的滴点以及耐水、耐油性能。其他用途包括化妆品膏霜和凝胶、与丙烯酸酯反应制成的热固性涂料、在橡胶和 PVC 加工中用作活化剂和润滑剂，以及上光剂、油墨和热熔胶。
