About This Product
12-Hydroxystearic acid, a saturated hydroxy fatty acid, is obtained from hydrogenated castor oil and is therefore also sold as hydrogenated castor oil fatty acid. This grade is a waxy, odourless solid in cream-coloured flakes, with a molecular weight of 300, a melting point of at least 73 °C and a 12-hydroxystearic acid content of 83–87% by GLC. Stearic acid accounts for 8–12% and 12-ketostearic acid for 2% at most.
In lubrication, the acid forms the soap thickener in lithium, calcium and barium greases, giving them a high drop point and resistance to water and oils. Other outlets include cosmetic creams and gels, thermosetting coatings made by reacting it with acrylic esters, rubber and PVC processing as an activator and lubricant, and polishes, inks and hot-melt adhesives.
Melting point and 12-hydroxystearic acid content can differ slightly from one specification to another, so check the acid value (175 mg KOH/g minimum), iodine value (5 g I₂/100 g maximum), Gardner colour, pack size and form against the lot offered. Before ordering, request the latest specification and SDS along with test results covering the actual lot; whether it suits the intended use, including any food-contact or cosmetic requirement, is for the buyer to confirm.
