硬脂酸钙由硬脂酸与钙源反应制得，是一种不溶于水的白色固体。供货指标为钙含量 6.5-7.1%、游离脂肪酸≤0.5%、熔点 149-155C、加热减量≤3.0%；形态为 125 目、200 目或 325 目粉末以及珠粒和颗粒，后者熔点 140-160C，适合低粉尘作业环境。植物基产品，脂肪酸来自棕榈。
金属皂是至今仍在大规模工业使用的最早一批油脂化工衍生物，而硬脂酸钙依放置位置不同承担三种性质迥异的工作。作为润滑剂，它迁移到熔体与约束熔体的金属之间的界面上，极性羧酸根端锚定在金属表面，C18 链则形成一层低摩擦层；作为脱模剂，同一层疏水膜阻止制品润湿模具。作为酸吸收剂，它所做的事在化学上完全不同：硬脂酸根捕获酸性物质，钙与酸结合并释放出硬脂酸，因此在残留催化剂或反应析出的酸会侵蚀聚合物的场合往往选用它。对沿棕榈产业链向下游延伸的买方而言，它比水解和分提又进了一步：脂肪酸已被转化为具有明确金属含量的功能性衍生物，而不再是按碳链长度分割出售的大宗馏分。
