硬脂酸锌由硬脂酸与锌源反应制得，所得金属皂不溶于水、疏水，常温下为固体。供货指标为锌含量 10.5-11.1%、游离脂肪酸≤0.5%、熔点 119-125C、加热减量≤1.0%；形态为 125 目、200 目或 325 目粉末，以及适合低粉尘作业的珠粒、片状和颗粒。植物基产品，脂肪酸来自棕榈。
除脂肪酸本身之外，它是用量最大的脂肪酸衍生物之一，原因在于疏水表面与较低熔点的组合。与对应的钙皂相比，它的熔点低约三十度，为 119-125C，金属含量则高出约一半；这两点差别决定了配混人员在什么场合选用哪一种，而许多配方会把两者搭配使用。熔点较低意味着这种皂在常规加工温度下即可软化铺展，在模具表面形成一层连续膜，而不是以离散颗粒的形式停留在那里，这正是脱模和防粘连场合通常选用它的原因。金属含量较高则意味着每加入一公斤可提供更多的锌。同样的疏水性使粉料在仓储中不易吸潮，但也让在极性体系中的润湿与分散成为这项工作中较难的部分。
