棕榈油甲酯属脂肪酸甲酯，由棕榈油或棕榈基脂肪酸与甲醇反应制得：反应以三个独立的甲酯取代甘油三酯的甘油骨架，并副产甘油。产品为澄清至淡黄色液体，黏度远低于原料油。
甘油三酯的裂解正是该物料具备工业价值的原因。甘油三酯分子大且黏稠，而相应的甲酯分子小、流动性好、可蒸馏，因而可分馏为窄碳链馏分、加氢制脂肪醇，或磺化制脂肪酸甲酯磺酸盐。作为溶剂，棕榈油甲酯兼具高闪点（通常远高于150摄氏度）、低挥发性和良好的生物降解性，因此在以作业人员接触和VOC限值为约束条件的清洗与脱脂工序中，可替代氯代溶剂和芳烃溶剂。其低温流动性是主要限制，饱和棕榈酸馏分在低温条件下开始结晶，因此浊点是一项规格指标。
本品供作生物基溶剂与脱脂剂、润滑剂与金属加工液基础油、脂肪醇与表面活性剂原料，以及工业油脂化学转化原料。
