月桂醇聚醚硫酸酯钠（SLES）是先将月桂醇乙氧基化再进行硫酸化制得的，在十二碳疏水链与硫酸基头基之间插入一段短的环氧乙烷单元链。其 INCI 名称为 Sodium Laureth Sulfate，各牌号以环氧乙烷单元的平均数目区分，最常见的是 2EO 或 3EO。供货形态为澄清至微浊的溶液，活性物含量 28% 或 70%。
引入聚醚链在三个方面改变了分子性能，且都与配方相关。它使硫酸基头基远离皮肤表面并增大胶束尺寸，可测量地降低蛋白质变性，使 SLES 在相同用量下明显比 SLS 温和。它增加了亲水性，使表面活性剂在硬水中不产生沉淀，并在低温下保持澄清。它还使体系对电解质高度敏感，因此向 SLES 基料中加入氯化钠即可显著增稠，这也是洗发水和沐浴露不使用聚合物即可获得稠度的常规方法。工艺上有一点需要控制：乙氧基化可能产生痕量 1,4-二噁烷，因此各牌号需经汽提脱除，并按目标市场的限量制定规格。
