About This Product
Sodium dodecyl sulfate, known commercially as sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS, is an anionic surfactant produced by sulphating lauryl alcohol, itself derived from coconut or palm kernel oil, and neutralising the result with sodium hydroxide. It carries CAS number 151-21-3 and the INCI name Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and is supplied as needles, powder or paste, or as a 28 to 30 percent solution.
Its effectiveness comes from a straightforward structure: a twelve-carbon tail attached to a small, fully ionised sulfate head. The tail is exactly the chain length at which a surfactant migrates fastest to a new air-water interface, and the sulfate head carries a strong permanent negative charge regardless of pH. Together these give very high foaming power and aggressive removal of oils and protein soils. The same properties explain its reputation for harshness: SLS denatures skin proteins readily, and it is used as the standard positive control in dermatological irritancy testing for precisely that reason. It is also sensitive to hard water, precipitating with calcium ions, and hydrolyses slowly in acid.
It is used in toothpaste, shampoos, industrial and household cleaners, car wash and degreasing products, as a foaming agent in fire-fighting and mining, in emulsion polymerisation, and as a laboratory reagent in protein electrophoresis.
Bio Green Oleo supplies sodium lauryl sulfate to specification on active matter, unsulphated matter, sodium sulfate, pH, colour and moisture.
