    环氧大豆油是商业上产量最大的环氧化植物油，也是该品类的标杆产品。环氧基团通过过酸氧化引入甘油三酯的不饱和键上，而环氧氧含量（通常标定为最低 6.5%）是决定其价值的规格指标。

    从油脂化学角度看，它介于原料与成品衍生物之间。环氧基是一个反应位点：用醇开环可得到用于硬质和软质聚氨酯的聚醚多元醇，用酸开环可得到酯型多元醇，水解则可直接得到多元醇。因此，ESBO 是制取生物基聚氨酯的可行路线之一，配方师出于可再生含量的考虑替代石化多元醇时即采用这一路线。

    它的第二个作用是酸吸收剂。张力环在氯化氢或路易斯酸性金属氯化物存在下易于开环，因此它在含卤聚合物体系中既是增塑剂，也起到辅助稳定剂的作用。

    与所有大豆来源的原料一样，其供应和价格跟随大豆油市场而非石化产业链。当最终应用有相关要求时，应在询价时确认可持续性文件、产地以及非转基因状态。
