鲸蜡醇是一种含十六个碳原子的直链饱和脂肪醇，系统命名为十六烷-1-醇，CAS 号 36653-82-4，INCI 名称 Cetyl Alcohol。它由棕榈油或椰子油来源的脂肪酸及其甲酯经还原制得，以白色片状、粒状或粉末形式供应。最初它是从抹香鲸的鲸蜡中分离得到的，其名称也由此而来；如今所有商品级产品均为植物来源或合成产品。
长烃链决定了它的性质，因此它呈蜡状且不溶于水，而非溶剂类物质，熔点约为 49 摄氏度。链端仅有的一个羟基就足以使分子具有两亲性，这正是其功能的基础。加入水包油乳液后，它与主乳化剂一同在液滴表面排列，形成刚性的界面膜，从而增稠产品并减缓液滴聚并。与碳链更长的硬脂醇相比，它带来更轻盈、更润滑的肤感和更柔软的膏体。
