棕榈硬脂是棕榈油经分提后分离出的高熔点部分。对加工企业而言，它与其说是一种具有特定熔点的油脂，不如说是十六碳饱和脂肪链的廉价浓缩来源，按碘值交易，通常为48或以下，更硬的牌号碘值更低。
对加工企业来说，其吸引力很直接：它是可获得的十六碳饱和脂肪链中最廉价的大宗来源。分提过程富集棕榈酸并除去大部分油酸和亚油酸，低不饱和度正是该物料在后续加工中表现良好的原因。双键较少意味着原料在加热加工过程中可抵抗氧化和色泽加深，若工艺路线经过氢化则耗氢更少，并可得到蒸馏性能良好的脂肪酸馏分。在皂化中，饱和链可生成硬度高、不透明、耗损慢的皂基，因此在以较软油脂为主体的洗衣皂和香皂配方中，硬脂是标准的增硬组分。
本品供作油脂分解与脂肪酸生产、肥皂与洗衣皂生产、蜡烛与蜡类配方、硬脂酸生产以及工业配混原料。
