About This Product
Soapstock acid oil is produced from soapstock, the alkaline by-product drawn off when crude vegetable oil is neutralised with caustic during chemical refining. Adding sulphuric acid splits the soaps into free fatty acids, which separate as an oil layer above the acid water. It is a dark brown to black viscous liquid with a strong odour.
Its defining commercial characteristic is variability. Where a refinery runs a single oil, the acid oil reflects that oil; where it runs mixed feedstock, the acid oil is a blend of whatever passed through, and the composition shifts from parcel to parcel. Free fatty acid content commonly ranges anywhere from 50 to 90 percent, with the balance made up of neutral oil, moisture, unsaponifiable matter, phosphatides and residual sulphate from acidulation. This is why it trades at the bottom of the fatty acid price range and why it is always bought against a certificate of analysis for the specific lot rather than a standing specification. Residual sulphuric acid also makes the material corrosive, so storage and pumping need acid-resistant equipment.
It is used for fatty acid splitting and recovery, industrial and laundry soap manufacture, biodiesel esterification, animal feed energy, and in oilfield, mining and construction chemicals.
Bio Green Oleo supplies soapstock acid oil to specification on free fatty acid, moisture and impurities, unsaponifiable matter, iodine value and residual sulphate.

Confirm the evidence before ordering
Grade, origin and certification are confirmed for each proposed source. A vegetable-derived feedstock is not automatically certified sustainable, pharmaceutical grade or suitable for every application; request the evidence needed for your intended use.
