About This Product
Sunflower acid oil is recovered from the soapstock produced when crude sunflower oil is neutralised with caustic soda during chemical refining. Acidulating that soapstock with sulphuric acid converts the soaps back to free fatty acids, which separate out as an oil layer. It is a by-product of the refining operation and is supplied as a brown viscous liquid.
Its composition mirrors sunflower oil, so it is dominated by linoleic acid, typically well over half the total, with oleic, palmitic and stearic acids making up the balance. High linoleic content means two double bonds on most chains, giving a high iodine value, permanent liquidity and useful reactivity for esterification, epoxidation and dimerisation. It is generally paler and lower in phosphatides than soybean or rapeseed acid oil, which makes it marginally easier to process, but the same polyunsaturation leaves it vulnerable to oxidation, darkening and odour development if it is stored warm or aerated for long. As with all acid oils, free fatty acid, moisture, impurities and residual sulphate vary between parcels and are confirmed by lot analysis.
It is used for fatty acid recovery and splitting, industrial and laundry soap manufacture, biodiesel esterification, animal feed energy and as feedstock for industrial chemical formulations.
Bio Green Oleo supplies sunflower acid oil to specification on free fatty acid, iodine value, moisture and impurities, unsaponifiable matter and residual sulphate.
