棕榈硬脂酸

以棕榈为原料的商品硬脂酸是混合物而非单一化合物，理解这一点是正确采购的前提。其生产方式是将棕榈油或棕榈硬脂分解为游离脂肪酸，再分离出饱和馏分，该馏分主要为十六碳的棕榈酸和十八碳的硬脂酸。产品以片状、珠状、粉状或块状供应。
牌号按这两种酸的比例标识，并按惯例以凝固点（titre，即熔融酸的凝固温度）标识。40:60牌号约含40%棕榈酸与60%硬脂酸；50:50是交易量最大的牌号；三压级则表示分离更彻底、色泽更浅的物料。由于硬脂酸的熔点比棕榈酸约高8度，凝固点随硬脂酸含量升高而升高，成品硬度亦随之提高。这并非商务细节：蜡烛配方、橡胶胶料与化妆品膏霜各自需要不同的凝固点，替换牌号会改变凝固点、硬度和外观。完全饱和使各牌号均具有良好的氧化稳定性。
用于橡胶硫化作活化剂，用于PVC和聚烯烃加工作润滑剂和稳定剂，用于蜡烛、化妆品膏霜与棒状产品、肥皂以及金属皂制造。
