    Shea Olein

    About This Product

Shea olein is separated from shea butter by fractionation: the melted butter is cooled until its stearic-rich triglycerides crystallise as stearin, and the softer, oleic-rich portion is filtered off. It is pale yellow and melts between about 20 and 35 degrees Celsius, so it is liquid in a warm plant and may set soft in a cold store.

Its saponification value of 170 to 190 mg KOH/g matches the parent butter, so it takes the same lye calculation in a soap formula, but its higher oleic content suits it to liquid soaps, soft soaps and oil blends, where the butter would crystallise. It keeps shea's unsaponifiable fraction, which passes through saponification as a conditioning component, and it emulsifies readily in creams and lotions. Total fatty matter is specified at 98 percent minimum and moisture at 0.20 percent maximum, because water in a liquid oil speeds up hydrolysis and rancidity in storage.

It is used in liquid and soft soaps, body and massage oils, creams and lotions, hair oils and conditioners, and as an oleic-rich base for esterification.

Bio Green Oleo supplies shea olein with a certificate of analysis for every batch, covering moisture, free fatty acid, saponification value, total fatty matter, melting point, colour and odour. Keep it sealed and away from heat and light, and warm it gently to make it uniform before use.
